Your Child's First Haircut: 7 Tips for a Happy Visit

We've given hundreds of first haircuts in this shop. Some kids smile the whole time, and some need a little more help. Here's what makes the biggest difference.

1. Pick the right time

Book a time after a nap and a snack. Weekday mornings are the quietest time in the shop.

2. Talk about it first

Tell your child what will happen. Let them watch a sibling or parent get a haircut first if you can.

3. Bring a comfort item

A favorite toy or show on your phone helps a lot. A little distraction goes a long way.

4. Sit on your lap if needed

Some kids feel safer on a parent's lap. That's completely fine with us.

5. Start with scissors

The buzz of clippers can be scary. We often start with scissors and only use clippers if your child is okay with them.

6. Keep it short and sweet

A first haircut doesn't need to be perfect. We focus on a clean, simple cut and keep it quick.

7. Celebrate

  • Take a before and after photo.
  • Save a lock of hair. We'll put it in an envelope for you.
  • Every first cut gets a certificate to take home.
