Paver patios look great when they're clean. But dirt, moss, and weeds love the gaps between the stones, especially in shady spots. Here's how to keep yours looking sharp.
Why weeds grow between pavers
Over time, rain and washing slowly pull the sand out of the joints. Dirt blows in, seeds land in it, and weeds take root. Moss grows wherever the stone stays damp and shady.
Clean it the right way
- Pull any big weeds by hand first
- Wash with a surface cleaner, not a narrow tip that blasts sand out
- Rinse the dirt off the patio, not into the joints
- Let the patio dry completely
Re-sand the joints
Polymeric sand is a special sand that hardens when it gets wet. Sweep it into the dry joints, then mist it with water. It locks the pavers in place and leaves no room for weeds.
Simple upkeep
Sweep your patio often, trim back plants that drop leaves on it, and give it a gentle wash once a year. Re-sanding usually lasts several years.
