A gray, weathered deck can look new again with one good wash. If you plan to stain or seal it, washing first is a must. Stain won't stick well to dirt, mildew, or old, loose wood fibers.
Wait for the wood to dry
Most decks need 2 to 3 dry, sunny days after washing before you stain. Shady decks or cool, damp weeks can take longer. If you stain too soon, the stain can peel or look blotchy.
The water drop test
Sprinkle a few drops of water on the boards. If the water soaks in within a minute, the wood is dry and ready. If it beads up and sits there, wait another day.
Pick the right stain
- Clear sealer: shows the wood grain, but needs redoing every year
- Semi-transparent: some color and grain, lasts 2 to 3 years
- Solid stain: covers like paint, great for older decks
Check the weather
Stain needs about 24 to 48 hours without rain to dry. Temperatures between 50 and 90 degrees work best. Avoid staining in direct afternoon sun on hot days.
