Should You Cover Your Outdoor AC Unit in Winter?

Every fall we get this question: should I cover the AC unit outside? The short answer is no, not all the way. Your outdoor unit is built to sit out in rain, snow, and ice.

Why a full cover can cause problems

A tight plastic cover traps moisture inside the unit. That can lead to rust, mold, and wet wiring. Mice and other small animals also love a warm, covered space and may chew the wires.

If you have a heat pump, never cover it

Many homes in East Tennessee use a heat pump. It looks like an AC unit, but it heats your home in winter too. Covering it will block airflow and can damage the system. If you're not sure which one you have, check the label or text us a photo.

What helps instead

  • Clear leaves, sticks, and grass clippings from around the unit.
  • Keep 2 feet of open space on all sides.
  • Trim back bushes that are growing close.
  • If you have a plain AC unit, a small board or mesh cover on top only is fine to keep leaves out.

Turn off the power for long winters (AC only)

If you have a plain AC unit and a separate furnace, you can switch off the outdoor disconnect for the winter. Just remember to turn it back on a day before you use the AC in spring.

Get a fall check

A fall tune-up is the best way to make sure your heat runs safely all winter. Our maintenance plan includes one every fall, plus an AC tune-up every spring.
