Ever notice how some yards just look sharper than others, even when the grass is the same? Most of the time, the secret is clean edges along the sidewalk, driveway, and flower beds.
Edging vs. trimming
Trimming cuts grass in spots the mower can't reach, like around trees and fences. Edging makes a clean, straight line where the grass meets concrete or a bed. Both are part of a finished look.
How often to edge
During the growing season, light edging every time you mow keeps lines crisp. If you let it go for a month, grass creeps over the concrete and it takes much more work to cut back.
How to edge like a crew
- Wear safety glasses and long pants
- Hold the string trimmer so the string spins straight up and down
- Walk slowly and follow the edge of the concrete
- Blow the clippings off the walk when you're done
Don't forget the beds
A clean edge around flower beds keeps grass from creeping in and mulch from washing out. Re-cut bed edges once or twice a year, usually in spring and fall.
