A car accident is scary, and it's hard to think clearly afterward. Keep this list in mind, or save it on your phone, so you know what to do.
At the scene
- Check for injuries and call 911 if anyone is hurt.
- Move to a safe spot if you can.
- Call the police so there's an official report.
- Take photos of the cars, the road, and any injuries.
- Get the other driver's name, phone, insurance, and plate number.
In the next few days
See a doctor, even if you feel fine. Some injuries, like whiplash, don't show up for a day or two. Your medical records also help prove your claim.
Be careful talking to the other driver's insurance company. You don't have to give a recorded statement, and early offers are often too low.
Don't wait too long
In Tennessee, you usually have just one year from the accident to file an injury lawsuit. That's shorter than most states, so it's smart to talk with a lawyer early.
