How to Choose a Shingle Color for Your Home

Your roof covers a big part of what people see when they look at your home. Picking the right shingle color can make your whole house look newer and more put-together.

Start with what won't change

Look at the parts of your home you aren't changing, like brick, stone, or siding. Your roof color should go well with those colors.

Simple pairings that work

  • White or gray siding: charcoal, black, or weathered wood
  • Tan or beige siding: brown, weathered wood, or dark gray
  • Red brick: charcoal, black, or brown
  • Blue or green siding: gray or charcoal

Think about heat

Darker shingles soak up more heat in summer. Lighter colors can help keep your attic a bit cooler. Good attic airflow matters even more than color.

Look at real homes

Small samples can look very different on a whole roof. Ask for addresses of homes with the colors you like, and drive by at different times of day.

Check HOA rules

If you live in a neighborhood with an HOA, check for color rules before you decide.
