Storm Damage on Your Roof? 5 Steps for an Insurance Claim

Spring and summer storms in East Tennessee can bring hail and strong winds. Roof damage isn't always easy to see from the ground, but it can lead to leaks months later. Here's what to do after a big storm.

1. Stay safe

Don't climb on your roof, especially when it's wet. Look from the ground for missing shingles, dents in gutters and vents, or shingle pieces in the yard.

2. Take photos

Take pictures of any damage you can see, inside and out. Include water stains on ceilings, dented gutters, and damaged cars or patio furniture. Write down the date of the storm.

3. Prevent more damage

If water is coming in, put a bucket under the leak and call for an emergency tarp. Most insurance policies expect you to stop more damage from happening. Keep your receipts.

4. Get a free inspection

A roofer can spot hail hits and wind damage that are hard to see from the ground. We take photos of every damaged spot, so you know if a claim makes sense before you call your insurance company.

5. File your claim and meet the adjuster

Call your insurance company to start the claim. They'll send an adjuster. We'll meet the adjuster on your roof to make sure nothing gets missed.

Don't wait too long

Many policies have a time limit for storm claims, often one year. Request a free inspection soon after any big storm.
