A check engine light can be scary, but it doesn't always mean a big repair. Here are the four causes we see most often at Ridgeline.
1. A loose gas cap
It sounds too simple, but a loose or cracked gas cap is one of the most common causes. Tighten it until it clicks and see if the light goes off after a few days of driving.
2. Oxygen sensor
O2 sensors help your engine burn fuel the right way. A bad one can lower your gas mileage by as much as 15%.
3. Spark plugs or ignition coils
Worn spark plugs can cause rough idling and misfires. They're an affordable fix that can make your car feel new again.
4. Catalytic converter
This one costs more, which is why it's important to catch the smaller problems above before they damage the converter.
Steady or flashing?
A steady light means book a diagnostic soon. A flashing light means pull over safely and call us, because driving can cause more damage.
