The old rule of changing your oil every 3,000 miles is mostly a thing of the past. Today's engines and synthetic oils last a lot longer. But the right number still depends on your car and how you drive.
Start with your owner's manual
Most cars made in the last 10 years call for an oil change every 5,000 to 10,000 miles with synthetic oil. Your manual is the best place to start.
When to change it sooner
- Lots of short trips under 10 minutes
- Towing or hauling heavy loads
- Stop-and-go traffic every day
- Dusty roads or very hot summers
If that sounds like your driving, the 'severe service' schedule in your manual applies, which is usually every 3,000 to 5,000 miles.
Don't forget to check it
Even between changes, check your oil level once a month. Low oil is one of the most common reasons engines wear out early.
