Getting Your Car Ready for a Tennessee Winter

Tennessee winters aren't long, but a few cold snaps can catch a car off guard. Here's what to check before the first freeze.

Battery

Cold weather can cut a battery's power in half. If yours is more than 3 years old, get a free battery test before it leaves you stuck.

Tires

Tire pressure drops about 1 PSI for every 10 degrees. Check your pressure monthly and make sure your tread passes the penny test.

Wipers and washer fluid

Replace streaky wipers and fill up with winter washer fluid that won't freeze.

Heat and defrost

Turn your heat and defroster on now, before you need them. If the air isn't warm, the coolant or heater core may need attention.

Emergency kit

  • Blanket and gloves
  • Phone charger
  • Flashlight
  • Jumper cables
  • Bottled water and snacks
