After a fall, a surgery, or a long illness, many people need a few weeks of therapy before it's safe to go home. Rehab works best when the patient and family are part of the team.
1. Set a clear goal
Tell your therapist what home looks like. Do you have stairs? A tub? A long walk to the mailbox? Therapy can then focus on exactly what you need.
2. Do every session
It's normal to feel tired or sore. But skipping sessions slows progress. Let your therapist know how you feel, and they can adjust the plan.
3. Eat and drink well
Your body needs protein and fluids to heal and build strength. Ask for snacks between meals if you're hungry.
4. Get out of bed
Sitting up for meals and moving between sessions helps you build strength faster than resting in bed all day.
5. Involve your family
Family members can watch a therapy session to learn how to help safely at home.
6. Plan for going home early
- Ask about grab bars or a shower chair
- Set up follow-up doctor visits
- Ask if home health or outpatient therapy is needed
- Make sure medications are easy to understand
