Choosing a nursing home can feel overwhelming. A tour helps a lot, because you get to see the care, meet the people, and trust your gut. Here are the questions we suggest every family ask, wherever you tour.
Questions about care
- How many nurses and aides work each shift?
- How long have most of your nurses worked here?
- How often does a doctor visit?
- Who do I call if I have a question at night?
Questions about daily life
- Can I see this month's activity calendar?
- Can residents choose what they eat and when they get up?
- Are families welcome to visit any day?
- Can I see a room like the one my loved one would have?
Look at the details
Notice how staff talk to residents. Are they kind and patient? Do residents look clean and comfortable? Does the building smell fresh? Small things tell you a lot.
